A Winter Morning with Alicia, Rob, and family!

Alicia, Rob, and Elliott came up from Calgary to visit Elliott's grandma and grandpa in St. Albert one weekend, so Rob arranged a photoshoot with us!

It was a cold, snowy morning, so we set up a makeshift studio in the basement (after moving the big treadmill).

Elliott took a minute to warm up... hahaha he's so cute!

Here's the four of them! (Alicia was pregnant at the time of the shoot)

So wow, it's been two months for Simon! I can't believe how fast time goes when hanging out with this little bologna loaf. (That's one of the many things I call him LOL)
He's been keeping us WAY too busy to do another formal shoot, so we're just gonna upload some snapshots.

THANK YOU Stefanie and Jim for this cute little sleeper! We love it now that he can fit into it, and it's definitely one of our favourites!

He was in pain one morning and he wouldn't relax unless held. So apparently I fell asleep while holding him, but he was still happy.

Something Merry tries to do everyday is go out on a walk with Simon. On this day, he didn't want to be bundled in. Rather, he wanted to 'hang out'. =)

Awards and Inspiration with PPOC

For the past few days, I've been attending the PPOC (Professional Photographers of Canada) Exposure Symposium put on by the Alberta and Saskatchewan regions. I had finally decided to join and got my membership about two weeks ago. The Symposium was absolutely fantastic for a couple of reasons.

The first reason was the awards. You can submit four photographs for the print salon and one album. When the dust settled, two of the images and the one album I submitted received (accepted) awards. I was told this is really good, especially for someone who's never experienced a PPOC print salon. The two images are below:

In addition, here is the album design for Kathyrn and Andrew's Mountain wedding in Canmore that also was honoured:

The photo of Cheryl and her friends was also a top three finalist for the best in class wedding group of the year. I was quite happy with that.

So thanks to all of you out there who helped us grow since we started wedding shooting 11 years ago. Mentors, colleagues, family, friends, and most certainly, our awesome brides and grooms!

The second awesome part of the Symposium was the speakers. They were all awesome, but the two that stood out to me was Scott Robert Lim and Dane Sanders.

Scott gave me clues to discover within myself what direction I should grow my photography, and Dane gave me a concrete plan of action to achieve it. The two presentations together really hit it for me and fell into each other. Both are really good speakers and you should jump at the chance to listen to either one.

So also a big hello to my new PPOC friends. I hope I can rely on you for help when I need it, and the door is always open for you if I can help *YOU* out in any way.

The mother of all diaper cakes!

Got an amazing diaper cake from our friends Aggo and Sonia. Seeing as I'm a total nerd and loved Star Trek since I was really little, they got us a Star Trek diaper cake!! Never in a million years would I have guessed there would be such a thing!!!

Simon is set for life now that Spock has he has given him the "Live long and prosper" salute!! (I have a Christmas ornament where Spock says the same thing when you push the button. It's Merry's favourite ornament haha) So HUGE thanks to Aggo and Sonia!!

Now to turn down the nerd factor a bit, I went to Fantasyland with my nieces and had a blast! We went to the Moonwalker playground. Ok ok... they're actually called Galaxyland and the Galaxy Kids Playpark now but 25 years ago they had better names for them. Here is Lauren hiding in the ball pit.

I was trying to follow her everywhere and every 10 seconds I heard, "Uncle Lloyd, hurry up! Uncle Lloyd, you're so slow!!!" I went from feeling good to old in 5 seconds flat. haha

And here is my other niece, Elizabeth (we call her Lizabee) showing expert no-hands ice cream eating technique. Notice the look of concentration from her would-be apprentice seated at the next table... LOL!

And Merry got a photo of Simon and I that I really love... right after his nightly bath. What a funny guy!

Shop talk with Jens

Yes I do... whether it is getting together for coffee to discuss the business of photography, teach photographic techniques, or as far as organizing a real photoshoot with models for hands-on training. Introducing our new... TOASTER!!!

Yeah I know, a toaster? What can I say? Simple pleasures for simple minds?

But this one is NEAT! We use the toaster a lot so we decided that it should be on our counter 24/7, so we thought we'd get something that matched the style of our house. Our old, 99 year old house that is.

So behold! Our new (but old) 1939 Sunbeam T-9 toaster!

It makes some MEAN toast, and does an especially good job of Merry's gluten free bread, which is difficult to toast.

Why doesn't anyone make appliances with any character anymore? (Aside from the Artisan mixer it shares the counter with, sitting in the background)

Cars on Ice!

One of my hobbies is driving fast... and the more slippery it is, the better!

Which is exactly what a couple friends and I went out to do today. We went to the Alberta Solo Association's winter autocross at the airstrip at the Canadian Forces Base. It's a great opportunity to drive like mad in a legal, safe environment.

The vast majority of cars were Subarus, unsurprisingly...

Here are my friends' cars. Steve drives the Impreza, Aref drives the Legacy SpecB.

Haha, for those of you who watched Looney Toons growing up, you know who I'm quoting.

So yeah, we've chosen the name Simon Sungwan for our little guy. He's doing awesome, thanks to EVERYONE for the well wishes!

He seems to change a little every day. Here's a few extra pics:

At 16:42 on wednesday January 13, 2010, we welcome our little guy to the world. No name yet, though we hope to have that settled by the time we check out of the hospital. Merry did an absolutely amazing job. I'm so proud of her!!!!

Every tuesday my photographer cousin Laura Hana runs a "what's your play?" fun game. A basic photo is posted up and everyone throws their processing interpretation on it. Check out her blog to participate yourself: http://www.dolcepics.com/

Here's my take on it:

-Various curve masks to reduce contrast between highlights and shadows
-Changed toning by dumping colours into a layers on top and selecting various blending modes (screen, Hue, multiply) and masking them to my liking
-Moved leaves over to a composition I liked with clone tool
-Bent branches (via liquify) to extend and connect to new leaf position
-Blur tool to even out the softness around the bends and cloning
-Brush tool at 50% to paint in colours that got skewed in the edit
-overlay a wall texture
-selective dodge and burn
-curve mask to bring out leaves more
-saturation mask to adjust colour levels as needed

Newborn Baby Jake!

It is a pleasure to introduce baby Jake to our viewers! Jake was born Dec 21, 2009 weighing 7.5 lbs. Stefanie and Jim couldn't be happier! He was such a good baby and didn't cry once through the shoot! (Though Stefanie did get peed on... oops!)

A blizzard and a wedding with Elaine and Brian!

And a Happy New Year to everyone!

We're going to start off 2010's first blog post with Elaine and Brian's awesome winter wedding. And let me tell you, it was REALLY a winter wedding! The conditions were cold, windy, blizzard, and undrivable in some places. But that was hardly a deterrent to Elaine and Brian's crew from celebrating a fantastic wedding!

And I'm glad, as I ABSOLUTELY LOVE shooting winter weddings! And I mean I REALLY love it!

In usual Chinese tradition, we started off at the bride's parents' house.

Getting the dress on!

Happiness abound!

Brian and the guys arrived, and had to pay, drink a nasty concoction, and sing a song to earn the right to get into the house.

Then they had to play the "pass the card with your lips" game, much to the laughter of everyone there!

Before the ceremony, we managed to get out for a few pics!

It was snowing and the wind was really strong!

Most people would shy away and stay indoors, but situations like this is when you can get something truly different than the usual wedding photos!

The ceremony was at Highlands United church.

Congratulations!

Then came the indoor shoot, which was booked at the Citadel.

Elaine looked fabulous!

The guys were goofy, as usual!

The girls were beautiful, as usual!

It was so dark in the atrium so it provided a different light to what is typical for the Citadel.

This cake had a water fountain in it! crazy!!

Elaine and Brian, your wedding was a fantastic way to cap off our 2009 wedding year! We were privileged to be a part of it, and SO lucky that you were willing to go outside despite the absolutely nasty weather!

Kathy, Clem, and Kalan decided to come up to Edmonton (from Calgary) to get a family photoshoot done! And Clem also loves coming up to Edmonton to sample the really diverse ethnic food selection here too. Why not kill two birds with one stone?

Jaclyn and Sebastian decided to skip the whole e-shoot thing and go for something a little different, which is always something I'm up for.

We met up with them a couple months AFTER their awesome wedding. They got dressed back into their wedding day outfits and we headed over to J and D Stables, where Jaclyn's two horses are boarded!

It was a beautiful fall day and a great time to get the horses out!

If horses could talk, I'd bet we'd be hearing the word, "HI!!!!". hahahaha

This is the horse Jaclyn has been riding since she was little.

And also got a couple shots of the two of them (sans horses).

Alissa and Bryce: married in fine style!

Alissa and Bryce chose a mid October day to have their wedding. At that time of year, you can have anything from +30 to -30. This time around though, it was around -5 and windy! That didn't seem to ruin the day at all though; it was fantastic in every way!

We toughed it out at the Provincial Museum for the photoshoot. People had to wait in the cars to warm up between shots. But it all worked well!

Then we went to the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald. Got to warm up a little bit!

Had some fun and played up the vintage theme, since they were dressed as so. hahaha, it worked well I think!

Eid ul-Adha at the Alberta Legislature!

Yesterday was the Annual "Eid at the Legislature", in commemoration of the festival of Eid ul-Adha. This is put on by the Ismaili Muslim Community, the Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities, and the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. We were privileged to be there in an official sense, shooting for the Muslim communities.

This is a very impressive event in that the Government of Alberta is the ONLY government in the entire western world that acknowledges and honours the Eid.

Anyhow, onto the pictures.

Many of our wedding clients have shot at the Legislature, but have never actually been inside. Well, here it is from the inside:

We got together with Stefanie and Jim on an October evening in St. Albert for a maternity lifestyle shoot. It was great to see them again as we shot their wedding back in 2007 and had a riot! This time though, the weather cooperated and it wasn't rainy! hahaha.

Stefanie and Jim are expecting their first in January! Exciting! So they thought it would be a great idea to get some pics before the little one arrives! And why not??!

For those who don't know, this is downtown St. Albert. Pretty darn nice!

A slight change in the blog

She insisted that I wasn't doing my pictures justice by posting them so small. I guess I'm a little dumb that way so kudos to her for showing me the way! Portraits with Apple Dental Care!

We met up with the crew from Apple Dental Care so they could get a nice wall portrait for their office.

They decided to coordinate with colourful gloves and scarves. Bright colours that matched their vibrant personalities. =)

It was a bit on the cool side, but the sun is almost always out despite the temperature.

Fall is so nice!

They were a lot of fun to hang out with!

I love this tree! Only tree I've ever seen that grows sideways instead of up.

Anyhow, it was an awesome day to meet up with you guys! Best wishes for the holiday season coming up! I am looking forward to delivering your wall print!

Maternity with Red and Josh!

Red and Josh contacted us for a lifestyle shoot which involved both maternity and some family photos. They were expecting a little one soon, and before I wrote this, she has already been brought into this world! Congratulations guys!

The weather turned on the day we planned to shoot. The temperature suddenly dropped and our original plan for outdoor maternity pics got canceled. A bit too cold to bare one's bare belly! So we shot some pics inside their baby room at their home. It was a pretty small space due to all the furniture and crib but we managed! =)

A rural touch with Char and Trevor!

We had the fortune of meeting up with Charlene and Trevor one misty morning. It was pretty wet out but they said it wasn't nearly enough to scare them off. Haha, my kind of models! =)

I'm glad they didn't cancel because we sure had a lot of fun that morning! The rural look was more akin to their tastes, which I was *very* happy to go along with!

Kayla and Aaron BLING it out!

The beginning of October got a little bit cold, but still was a beautiful day for a wedding! Nothing was going to stop Kayla from having the most amazing wedding she could possibly have. And she was successful!

She really pulled out all the stops, and all the details were absolutely beautiful!

Haha, all the girls had their respective custom hoodies. It was cute!

The shoes were something to die for. Valentinos. 'nuff said.

Then we went to the Matrix Hotel where the reception was held. It was a little bit too cold for more outdoor photos so we went inside for some.

I love autumn!

Skies were looking a little unfriendly, and gave us a touch of rain.

The theme of the wedding was: BLING!
The purple cards were the place cards, and each card had it's own holder full of shiny stones.

And blinged out it was!

This cake was AMAZING! I knew it would BLOW me away, as Kayla told me they hired Deliciously Different Cakes out of St. Albert. I wasn't surprised as Kayla settles for nothing but the best, and they are.

The drinks were chilled by being poured through the ice sculpture!

Ok, there was a lot of forced man kisses in this reception... LOL

And a wonderful first dance.

Cindy and David's wedding promised to be a great one. Being a Portuguese and Italian wedding, I knew there was going to be great food all day long. (I know, I can't stop talking about food) And I was right. From morning until night. hahaha.

First I went to see the guys. They were all disoriented trying to figure out how to get the boutonnières on. It was quite funny.

Then it was off to see Cindy and the girls.

The ceremomy was at the VERY beautiful St. Joachim church.

The dress was REALLY long and beautiful!

They sure don't make churches like they used to!

Wow, two weddings in a row that wasn't in direct sun all day. I was starting to think this wasn't Edmonton! It sure made for some pretty pictures though! =)

The reception was at the main ballroom at the Crowne Plaza Chateau Lacombe. One of the prettiest ballrooms in the city.

There were a bunch of kids that really had the dance moves down! It was actually quite amazing. They couldn't even wait for the real dance to start!

Fall arrives with Sarah and Gerald!

The Sept 19 weekend was the first weekend where the leaves REALLY started to change colour. It always unpredictable when it'll happen but this year it seemed later than usual. Which is good as it looks like we're having a late, long autumn.

So the timing was right as Sarah wanted photos in the local ravine by her place! Perfect!

This was just before a dog rushed in and almost stepped all over Sarah's dress! It was funny, Sarah knew all the dogs' names we met in the ravine, as they walk their dog there every day and have gotten to know the neighbourhood canines. They all seemed really excited to see her and Gerald! hahaha it was so cute!

We had a real treat shooting a very special Best Friends Forever shoot with Andrea and Stephanie.

All I can really say is, these two are just ADORABLE together! They really bring out the smiles and laughter in each other so it's easy to see how they're BFF!

A beautiful wedding with Melania and Kent!

I knew Melania and Kent's wedding was going to be awesome. Ukrainian weddings really suit me well. Good times, great people, great food... everything I like! =)

Their wedding was no exception!

Melania and the girls started out at Eveline Charles for hair and makeup.

We then met up with the guys where they took Kent down while playing football... hahah. Oh the tough life of the groomsmen! hahaha

So we have snow. Is that such a bad thing? No way!!!

So it's been snowing here in Edmonton. Wow. Snowing in early October. Edmonton has cold winters but it usually doesn't start this early.

Now, I'm constantly hearing people complaining about it and hating it. But why? I was so happy to see the snow coming down. It was absolutely beautiful. My friend was also thrilled to see the snow so we decided to take a walk while it was dusting the landscape white.

I'm really glad I did take a walk; it was a real treat and SUCH a unique experience. For some reason, many trees still have green leaves (which is not normal for Edmonton this time of year), and some have changed to their fall colours. And at the same time, we have snow. It's like seeing THREE seasons all at the same time. What a great opportunity it was. I felt so lucky! And double lucky that Edmonton has some of the finest inner city parkland around. And triple lucky that I live right by it! =)

Being the photo nerd I am, of course I took my little 40D and Sigma 30mm 1.4 (One of my favourite combos) and snapped some shots.

What can I say, we live in Edmonton. The only way to survive is to adopt the winter cold as your friend. There is almost nothing more serene than having a warm drink and sitting by a window looking as it snows outside.

Chickens and Relatives

So my uncle and aunt came to visit Canada, all the way from Korea. It's their first time here. They were staying with my parents so we went down to Calgary to see them. We figured they would want a couple photos so we took some.

My dad (on the right) and his brother. They've been through a lot together.

Hahaha, and this picture just makes me laugh every time I look at it. Here is my aunt and uncle, with my mom's chickens getting in the way. LOL I love the combination of the serious Korean photo faces, and the carefree happy chickens. Chickens are such funny creatures.

Just thought some of you might get a kick out of the second photo as much as I did.

Four days with Pragati and Arvind!

I had the fortune of spending 4 utterly fantastic days with Pragati, Arvind, and their families and friends. Amazing would be one way to describe it. Delicious would be another. (I love Indian food) There was so much going on that this is going to be a loooong post so bear with me, and be sure to watch the slideshow at the end; it's worth it! ;)

The first day was at very beautiful and classy Oasis Conference Centre. The traditions began that night.

The second day was the Mehndi party. Here is Pragati awaiting her artist.

And now we come to day 4... wedding day! Pragati's dress was AMAZING! The detailing was really unbelievable. She got the dress from India and had to weigh it to put it in her baggage, and it was TEN pounds... no exaggeration or estimation. The ceremony and reception were held at the always amazing River Cree Resort.

So Arvind was supposed to ride in on a horse. Not quite a horse, but it's the next best thing!

This is supposed to be the first moment Pragati and Arvind lay eyes on each other. Well, except that it wasn't an arranged marriage, so it wasn't quite the first moment! hahaha.

And here, Arvind had to make a bunch of promises to Pragati... to which he was unaware he would have to do. They were some funny and entertaining promises there that gave everyone a good laugh.

We went off to the U of A campus for some photos. I thought this shot of Pragati fixing Arvind's necklace was super cute.

So congratulations guys! It was a FANTASTIC, AMAZING 4 days. You ALL made me really feel like family and I was actually sad the next day when I realized I wouldn't see you guys! It was SO much fun and I'm honoured to have shared it with you. I wish you the very best as you start your lives together in Vancouver. Keep in touch!

Jamie and Homer - USA meets Canada

We had a fantastic time with Jamie and Homer. It was such an amazing turnout considering Homer's half was from California. Good thing it wasn't a cold weekend to scare the Californians away from Edmonton forever! =) This was actually their second wedding. Their first ceremony was in California.

A fun wedding with Cynthia and Van!!

Cynthia and Van had a full day planned out. Typical Asian wedding; busy but tons of fun! It started off with some crazy fog but soon turned into a beautiful day with perfect weather. Not even too hot!

Beautiful Canmore with Kathryn and Andrew!

We were lucky to be able to spend an amazing August wedding weekend with Kathryn and Andrew in the most beautiful town of Canmore. I absolutely adore the mountains!

Started off with Andrew getting ready for the day. This was moments before he cut himself with the razor. D'OH!!

Sunrise with Kathryn and Andrew!

We had a unique e-shoot with Kathryn and Andrew. It was a sunrise e-shoot. Not many couples are really eager to get together at 7:30AM for an e-shoot. But they were. And we had the fortune of shooting it in the beautiful Rocky Mountains in Canmore, Alberta!

We checked out this old defunct coal mine. It was awesome!

Kathryn and Andrew are totally into fun posing. LOL. Canada's next top models? Andrew told me long ago if Engineering didn't work out for him it would be modeling for sure. =)

Hardcore FLAMES fans! I had difficulty with this as a hardcore Oilers fan... LOL!

It was super fun! I'm surprised at how cheerful you guys can be so early in the morning... especially after a late night of partying!

For Cindy and David's e-shoot, Cindy requested a train yard. I was all over this; I love shooting in train yards! It's been a couple years since I've done that!

An evening of drama with Pragati and Arvind

We got together with Pragati and Arvind one evening for their e-shoot... which turned out to be a little more eventful than your typical e-shoot.

We met just outside downtown... in the slums by the prison (this sounds bad already). Interesting characters all around some of which followed us, some of which watched intently while standing WAY too close for comfort, and some of which said some interesting things to us. But the day also involved seeing a 5 on 1 fight to which we actually had to call the police on.

Oh well, it sure made for an interesting shoot! Onto the pictures!

Arvind wanted a shot of them with his car which he loves so much. Sadly, he is selling it as the place they are going to live in Vancouver has only one parking stall.

And just before this shot, a guy walked all the way down this path to give us photography advice, which was, "You gotta throw away your egos in order to see the light."

Well guys, thanks for sticking it out and having a good time despite all the weirdos and fist fights. Looking forward to the wedding!

Shantel and Rob rock on!

This group was all about rock 'n roll. In other words... always having a great time with great music! hahaha. It made the day only that much more fun!

Everything was downtown. Doesn't surprise me, Shantel totally seemed like the stylish and hip downtown girl type. Surprising that she actually lives quite far away from it though. =)

We started at the amazing Headlines Salon in Manulife Place.

And then to the Bobbi Brown makeup counter in Holt Renfrew where they did an absolutely stunning job.

Right after getting into her dress. She looks amazing!

The ceremony was at the Citadel Theatre.

Rob looked a bit blown away seeing his future wife. But that's pretty much how everyone reacted when they saw Shantel.

LOL... Shantel had to put a bit of muscle into getting that ring on Rob's finger!

Shantel's dad has worked for ETS for many decades, so props to him! So she wanted some photos with an ETS theme, so we ducked onto the underground train platform.

We waited for the LRT to come by. You gotta see the slideshow below for the full effect! =)

Carlene and Calvin at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge

I was super excited for Carlene and Calvin's wedding as it was in my most favourite place to visit in the world... Jasper! To add to the gravy, it was at the Fairmont, which is always the gold standard of venues across the nation.

We started at the salon in the lodge, which did a fantastic job on the hair and makeup.

The dress was gorgeous.

It was one brutally hot saturday for Bev and Arnel's wedding. But that didn't stop the day from being nothing short of awesome!

And a BIG thanks to the bridal party. I cannot tell you how much we appreciated you guys; nobody complained or whined about the intense heat at all and still managed to have fun despite being uncomfortable.

What a crazy storm!!!

Last night was an interesting night. First, we came home from Bev and Arnel's wedding, and all the power was out in our community. It was out all night and finally back up early morning. Because the streets were pitch black out, some thieves took the opportunity to break into some cars... mine included. =(

Then we checked out our other house, which is only a few blocks away. The crazy storm really did a number on the big, old, beautiful trees surrounding the house!

Here's half of a tree, broken down and fallen onto our house.

Fortunately, it did minimal damage. Eaves are damaged, but nothing else broken. Lucky!!

Our house is behind there somewhere....

There are two gorgeous trees that shade our house and our neighbour's house. Both fell victim to the storm and it doesn't look like they can be salvaged. The roots are pulled right out of the ground... taking the sidewalk with it too. This poor tree fell on my neighbour's van.

The other tree fell onto my neighbour's garage and is leaning up against it.

The path down the side of our house now leads to a dead end! LOL

I'm hoping that all of you were safe and well through the storm and didn't suffer any damages.

Fire, Ambulance, and a wedding with Jaclyn and Sebastian!

I had the privilege of shoot the wedding of Jaclyn and Sebastian. Sebastian is a member of the Fire Services personnel of Spruce Grove. If you're in that area, it's likely him and his friends who'll save your life if you need an ambulance or if your house is on fire. Or, you know... if your cat is stuck in a tree. =)

We started out meeting Jaclyn and the girls.

Sparky the fire dog joined us for the shoot, and was up to some mischief.

The Devonian was next on the agenda.

Spruce Grove with Amber and Jonathan!

Amber and Jonathan's wedding rocked. It was planned well and the people were so fantastic to hang around. There were threatening skies for part of the day, along with a downpour or two, but hey, all was still good!

Evening and Night with Cynthia and Van!

Cynthia and Van were waiting and waiting for a day when we could do their engagement shoot in the rain. No opportunity was presenting itself.

Too bad we didn't wait until this week... LOL. What luck!

So instead Cynthia decided that a late evening / night shoot would also be unique. Which I also absolutely love. The only problem is, the sun falls around 11PM here in Edmonton at this time of year. No problem!

By now, the sun was really falling at this point.

But that's when it's also gets really pretty out.

10:30 and still not night, but close enough!

I guess we were just a couple weeks too early for the rain! But I loved shooting at night too! We'll see you at the wedding!

Erin and Jorge put together an awesome wedding! There was so much going on and everything was so well planned. It was a beautiful day all-around!

They had this beautiful ice sculpture... but the awesome part was that some of the drinks were served THROUGH the scuplture. Pour into the top, and it poured out of a hole in the front, cold as ice by the time it hits your glass. Brilliant!

They sure took a LOT of shots at Jorge during the speeches. hahaha

Their first dance was awesome.

And what do you get when you put a big group of Ukrainian and Spanish people together? A mass of ridiculously amazing dancers.

It was an excellent, classy and beautiful wedding. Thanks for letting us be a part of it, and for even feeding us a feast the next day too! That was amazing stuff!

Amber and Jonathan at the Devonian

The Devonian is always an awesome place to get some photos done! So we were pumped to go there for an e-shoot with Amber and Jonathan.

It was a cold and rainy day, but they were willing to tough it out. Glad they did as we had a great time out there and it only rained a little bit.

Bev and Arnel requested a night e-shoot after seeing some of the night shooting we've been doing.
We were totally excited of course, but the only problem is Edmonton stays really bright until really late! d'oh!

I love this time of year. Some select areas of edmonton are littered with pink blossoms. It's about a month late this year but still just as pretty.

That is the best word to describe this wedding. Party! Everyone was so into having fun it was awesome. Great weather to boot which only made it better! That's a good thing considering this was an outdoor wedding!

A risky time of year to plan a wedding, but the weather turned out to be absolutely perfect for Danielle and Ben for their Calgary wedding!

Just thought I'd share a couple of night shots that my niece and nephew helped me take. They told me what to shoot and I obeyed... LOL.

I love shooting at night. Getting away at night for 20 minutes during a wedding reception is one of my most favourite ways to shoot. We usually get the best photos at that time because the bride and groom are relaxed, it's not so hot out, and night wedding shooting is just so darn unique.

As mentioned below, we had the privilege of shooting the wedding of Lesley and Dale in one of the greatest places on earth (in my opinion): JASPER! I *LOVE* Jasper and it is definitely my favourite place to shoot weddings in in the entire world.

I love Jasper

Jasper is probably my most favourite place in the world. Stunning beauty, and MUCH LESS commercialized than it's overrated and very popular neighbour, Banff. We had the fortune of being in Jasper this past weekend to shoot the wedding of Lesley and Dale, so stay tuned for their wedding photos which should on this blog in the near future.

In the meantime, here are a few quickie snapshots we took on the way home.

And THESE guys were blocking the highway. There were probably about 30 of them, mostly juvenile, hanging out. The herd took their sweet time crossing the highway.

It was a good few minutes before we were able to get through the mess. One tough guy in a huge Dodge Ram tried scaring them with his horn and revving engine. They did nothing but stick their butts out at him. Hahaha I love it.

Tell us if you love Jasper too! We should start a fan club! =)

We got to usher the new year with Natalie and Evan... one of the coolest couples on earth! I love winter weddings and this was no exception. There is something about cold, snow, and the stillness of winter that I just love. It was also around -28C but Natalie was prepared! Awesome!

Who likes skiing?

I do.

But I only ski on average once every two years. I used to be such a ski bum but it's so expensive now that I really don't go to the slopes very often.

Which usually means every time I ski, I'm in horrible shape for skiing, and end up being just about dead by the end of the trip. This one was no exception.

Proof I actually went to the hill! We went to Sunshine for three days.

The weather for day 1 was fabulous. In fact, it was a bit warm.

This is Jared, my friend who organized the trip.

And of course, FOOD is a huge part of my life, and this trip was no exception. This dinner was EPIC. Garden salad, carrot ginger soup, smelts, shrimp cocktail, ravioli, bison steaks, pumpkin pie, and fresh baked cookies. (The cookies were in the over during this shot. haha) Food rocks. I love food.

The next days were much colder but still awesome. Gosh I love the mountains. I honestly believe I live in the most amazing place in the world... Alberta! The landscape is SO diverse and gorgeous!

Ok, so it's a little late... but better late than never. Just wanted to wish you all a happy new year! I hope Santa was nice to all of you and you got what you wanted! Looking forward to another AWESOME shooting season! I can't wait!

Some of my colleagues have been bugging me to show some of my featured stuff online. It's a bit of old news but I guess I will post it up anyways. One of my resolutions is to be a little better with blogging. :)

First up, the ever-popular Canadian wedding magazine called WeddingBells contacted me months ago to be featured on the first page of the Edmonton section of the magazine. We were pleased to agree.

Another love of mine is shooting architecture. I've always had a love for it even though I don't display it on my website. Opulence magazine approached me to shoot a spec home for Soul Homes. Soul Homes is a speciality builder which creates GORGEOUS, clean home designs, built without a single cut corner, and put together with a lot of love poured into everything from design to finish. This is a builder that builds purely for the love of it. This home featured here recently sold in the millions.

Kristine and Josh planned a wedding during a risky time of year... mid November. It was pretty cold that day but it was the wind that was brutal. Kristine and Josh were total troopers though and were adamant to brave the cold for outdoor photos. Awesome!

Maddy and Josh round two!

If you thought planning one wedding was tough, how about planning and carrying out TWO weddings, in two totally different countries, two completely different sets of vendors, and only spaced 10 days apart? Well, somehow Maddy and Josh managed to plan it all and carry it through in great spirits. Night and Day were flattered to be their chosen photographer for the Canadian version of their wedding. =)

The whole wedding party was an absolute hoot. They wanted a smoking picture (even though most of them don't even smoke LOL)

There seemed to be a lot of kicking involved that day. Apparently, Josh's friendship with two of his groomsmen were founded on kicking one of them in the head many years ago. (No joke)

The weather that day was crazy! Sunny and mild, then suddenly brutally cold and fierce winds, then followed by sudden darkness and rain.

I love how Maddy shoved cake up Josh's nose with such a matter-of-fact expression. She didn't even have to look. Hahahaha

So anyhow, thanks for a great time. You guys were such great sports despite the bitter cold winds and weather, the exhaustion of doing the whole wedding thing the previous week, yet we still managed to have an absolute hoot all day.

Three awesome days with Amal and Aleem!

We were excited to meet up with Amal and Aleem for their three day extravaganza. I love East Indian weddings. The colours, the traditions, the FOOD! Oh yes, how I love the food.

Day 1 was the Mendhi for Amal. The artist was amazing and one of the best I've ever seen.

Day two

Amal brought in an amazing belly dancer.

Aleem didn't fare so well at his party though... hahahaha

Day three. Aleem's mom was a bit skeptical when I chose her kitchen trash bin to shoot their rings on. I like it. =)

And here they are finally together on their wedding day!

It was a beautiful October day!

Then off for the ceremony.

They seemed happy to sign the contracts.

Then we went to the Matrix Hotel for a wardrobe/hair/makeup change.

Haha, the hotel reception was nice enough to let us usurp the front desk for this shot.

This darn fireplace turns on and off randomly... and every time we set up for the shot it would turn off. It took us about 3-4 tries to finally get a shot with the fire on.

Fall colours with Carla and Miguel

We went down to Calgary again to enjoy the beautiful fall colours with Carla and Miguel.

First met up with Carla at the beautiful Eau Claire Sheraton downtown

Then off to the salon!

We then met up with the guys at Carla and Miguel's beautiful condo in the prestigious Mount Royal area. We only had to walk onto the street right in front of their place to find some great photo spots.

Le and Raymond in Calgary!

We headed down to Calgary for the wedding of Le and Raymond. Boy were we surprised when we woke up that morning and had to scrape ice off our car! We didn't even have a scraper in the trunk! It turned out to be a gorgeous day despite that, and everyone had a blast!

It was then off to Stephen Ave.

It was nice that the leaves were still on the trees!

Amal and Aleem at the mall!

We met up with Amal and Aleem at West Edmonton Mall for some after hours shooting, around the Europa Blvd area. It gets REALLY dark there after hours but we still managed to have a lot of fun! Europa Blvd looks nice at night! (They really need to replace all the burnt out bulbs though)

It was also an eventful night. While we were shooting in front of the fountain on Bourbon St, a fight broke out right beside us at Hooters. There were a dozen guys there and only one poor security guard at first. Eventually, all was resolved and order restored. LOL.

We are totally looking forward to the big multi-day wedding! Can't wait!

The day started off in a very colourful, traditional Vietnamese way. Everyone was decked out in awesome, vibrant colours!

And of course, the universal east Asian tea ceremony.

Aref and his brothers, dressed up in traditional threads, felt compelled to strike up some martial arts poses. (More the in link below)

Amanda and Glenn survive the heat!

It was one brutally hot weekend, but nobody seemed to care as Amanda and Glenn's awesome outdoor ceremony was awesome!

This group of girls were multi-talented. Hair and makeup experts galore! Here's something you don't see every wedding... a hair styling train!

Thank goodness for shuttles to get us around the park quickly, and under shade!

Then the reception was at the beautiful River Cree Resort, of which Night and Day Photography is the recommended photographer for their high end weddings. woot! That's how Amanda and Glenn found us, which I'm thankful for as they just plain rock! Here is their first dance.

BIG props to all of you for knowing how to stay relaxed and be totally silly and a barrel of fun ALL day, every minute. We truly had SUCH a great time! It was nothing short of a fantastic wedding!

It was to be a busy day with Danielle and Heng, following the Chinese wedding traditions for their celebration!

Danielle was in great spirits in the morning:

And soon the guys arrived where Heng was forced to find a buried key in the un-sodded backyard with only a shovel and a metal detector! He DID manage to find a rusty nail or two in the process.

We stopped in at Tim Horton's for some pictures. Danielle and Heng first met at a Tim Horton's so of course we couldn't skip that!!

Nighttime with Allison and Nate!

Was excited to get together with Allison and Nate for their e-shoot as Allison requested night shooting! I'm totally game for night shooting! I love it! (Hence the reason why "Night" is the first word of our company name!)

We had a blast! Even though it was probably the coldest night of the summer! Winter jackets in July? What on earth? Thankfully Allison and Nate braved the cold anyhow.

Vintage style with Alya and Randall!

I'd like to give some serious kudos to Alya. Her makeup artist simply decided to just 'not show up' the morning of the wedding. So Alya got her makeup done by someone else whom she was unfamiliar with. Stayed totally calm.

The comes the ceremony, and the marriage commissioner forgets to show up! After many phone calls he eventually made it... about two hours late!! Both Randall and Alya never lost their cool, and managed to still smile and enjoy the wait.

So THANK YOU for being so patient and wonderful to work with. Your great attitude only makes my job much easier and less stressful.

Now, on to the photos! The theme of the wedding was vintage! It was awesome! Alya's vintage style dress was gorgeous, and the guys looked awesome in their morning suits.

Following Russian tradition, there are games the bridesmaids put the groom through in order to meet his bride. If he fails any of the tests, he pays money. (If you are thinking it's just like Chinese tradition, you're right!) Randall had to guess which baby picture was Alya. Can you guess?

Then we went to the Legislature with the bridal party!

In keeping with the vintage theme, the reception was at Fort Edmonton Park!

As Alya is a photographer herself, she was totally willing to leave the reception for a bit go out late at night for some night shooting!

Had an awesome day with Mary and Jae!

As Mary is Chinese, of course Jae and his groomsmen had to do a bunch of 'tasks' to get into the bride's house, including the can-can.

Then it was off to the ceremony!

Mary was such a great sport, sitting in the tall weeds despite the fact that she hated bugs, and had a daddy long legs crawling on her... yikes!

Andrea and Kim e-shoot!

Andrea and Kim came prepared for this shoot. They brought along their two dogs, a friend to mind the dogs during the shoot, sidewalk chalk, and a machine called "Gazillion bubbles". We knew it was going to be a unique evening!

So first we started off their their crazy hyper, but very cute dogs. Those guys run like a million miles an hour! They were hard to keep up with!

Then it was off with just Andrea and Kim.

We don't get many days with skies like this, so we took full advantage.

Country style with Janis and Jacob!

We had the privilege of attending Janis and Jacob's beautiful wedding out in the country at the Skaro Shrine.

But first we started at the salon:

Then it was out to Skaro for the beautiful ceremony!

We were greeted with beautiful blue skies!

The girls were looking fantastic.

We took shelter in this stone tunnel. Jacob's great grandfather was one of the people who helped build the shrine! Awesome!

I think the guys were quite attached to Jacob... LOL

Met up with Megan and Dean in St. Albert for their wedding! Started out catching everyone during the preparations:

All the guys were in kilts.

Karen and Chris' rockin' wedding!

We knew Karen and Chris' wedding would be a full of tradition and culture, and we definitely were not disappointed! It was a jam packed busy day but definitely a fun one!

Lyndsey and Jason's amazing day!

We met up with Lyndsey and the girls at Electrik Lemon Salon... in the pouring rain. Rain on a wedding day is good luck, right? Well, fortunately, it stopped in the morning and was threatening but beautiful the rest of the day! whew!!

We met up with Aref and Thuan for e-shoot number two. Their first e-shoot was rained out and we only got a couple pics before we had to run to our cars to avoid the downpour. That first e-shoot can be seen HERE.

Starting the morning in a questionable cold weather scenario yet again had us in a bit of a worry, but it soon warmed up and the snow was starting to melt. By afternoon, it had turned into a beautiful day! (Amidst the remaining slush... LOL)

We got together for an e-shoot on an absolutely gorgeous weekend with Danielle, Heng, and their adorable little guy name Kaidyn. Kaidyn provided the entertainment for the day; he was so cute. His jeans were also a touch loose and unfortunately were falling on him through the shoot... but he was a great sport about it... hahaha ;)

Beth and Jared survive the blizzard... and have fun too!

Anyone in Edmonton who woke up on April 5, 2008 was in for a treat. After a beautifully warm week, we got a huge dump of snow literally overnight. Probably over a foot of snow. By the time we left to meet Beth and the girls at the salon, it was STILL snowing brutally hard. Yes, it was definitely more than a snowfall; it was a blizzard:

We were at Ricci Salon, where Beth's hairdresser had to leave for Toronto right after Beth was done as she was up for the best new Canadian hairdresser award.

The ceremony was beautiful, as was the bride! (You look pretty good too Jared ;)

Jared was a hoot, trying all kinds of silly poses for the camera. A natural!

And Beth was nothing short of breathtaking:

Let's switch it up and let the girls be the tough ones in the bridal party. They look pretty tough to me at least.

Belly pics with Red and Josh!

We met Red and Josh last year at a wedding we shot, and since then they have approached us to do a few maternity photos. Red is due next month! Totally exciting stuff! So we went over to their place to for a little shoot.

Red was in great shape and looked amazing!

Haha, who said a back alleyway isn't a good spot for a maternity pic? LOL

Their cat Luna was all over the place, jumping in and out of pictures. hahaha. I love cats! And Josh was just being himself and providing lots of laughs for all of us throughout the shoot, even doing some really silly poses.

A close call with Mary and Jae!

Met up with Mary and Jae for an evening e-shoot. It was windy so it felt like our ears were going to fall off. We had to jump into the car every 5 minutes to prevent frostbite! Managed to squeeze some shots in between defrosting cycles!

Then the shoot ended, we headed towards the car, and then all of a sudden, Mary realizes her engagement ring is NO LONGER ON HER FINGER! YIKES! So the four of us began a mad search for it. It was lost in the worst place possible... a field full of grasses, weeds, dirt, mud, snow, and even some holes here and there. That and the sun was falling fast. We just about froze out there and had to leave dejected and empty handed. I have to say, Jae and Mary remained AMAZINGLY calm and composed through the ordeal, so serious kudos to them. They went out later that night with a flashlight but still no luck.

The next day, they went out and rented a metal detector and continued the search. I was told the detector was beeping at everything so it was really hard to determine it if it was helping or handicapping. It didn't help that it was SNOWING quite hard and left a 1 inch white blanket over everything. I'll let the photos tell the rest of the story.

So a BIG relief for them! I told Mary that now that it's over, she's kinda lucky. How many girls can get THAT excited over receiving the same ring TWICE? I'm sure Jae is just glad that he doesn't have to buy another one. Hahaha. jk

It hit -27C (-17F) the day Melanie and Jason got married, but you wouldn't even know as everyone was in a great mood and had TONS of fun... including us! Yes, this is February in Edmonton.

(She already picked her top 3 and almost skipped this one completely!)

No, three people did not get married. I decided I would tag along with my friend and colleague Jennifer Jacula who was shooting the wedding of Ruth and Eric in Edmonton. Jenn serves the rural areas east of Edmonton, and while Ruth and Eric are from St. Paul, the wedding was to be in Edmonton.

I had a lot of fun hanging out with everyone! I thank you for letting me join you for your winter wedding. Gosh I LOVE winter. I think I'm the only one in the city who LOVES the recent -38C weather (-56C with windchill). It actually makes me happy. hahaha.

Amanda and Glenn winter e-shoot!

Amanda and Glenn braved the cold to come out to meet us for a fun e-shoot in the Mill Creek Ravine. They were total troopers, as they walked through some really snowy inclines in some less-than-ideal-for-snow footwear. And even walked right onto the creek, which was insanely slippery!

So thanks again you guys! It was a lot of fun hanging out and braving slippery conditions. Can't wait for the wedding the Devonian and River Cree!

Merry and I went to Calgary for Christmas to hang out with friends and family. Here are just a couple funny pics from the trip...

Got together with Beth and Jared for a super fun e-shoot at the beautiful Hotel Macdonald. Gosh I love this place!

We wanted a shot infront of the big fireplace, but this guy had parked himself infront of it and apparently had been there for hours. So we went outside, back inside, upstairs, and then some staff told us to go into one of the banquet rooms as there was nobody there. So we did. Why not? =)

Afterwards, we sat down in the lounge for refreshments and a chat. When we finally were getting ready to leave, Mr. Hog-the-fireplace finally left, but we were already done for the day. Oh well! hahaha

I knew we would have a lot of fun at this wedding, as it was a fantastic blend of tradition and celebration. That and it actually wasn't sub zero, which is rare in Edmonton this time of year.

So we caught up with the girls:
